In 1947, in Hemel Hempstead, women belonging to the Women’s Voluntary Service (later the WRVS) created a service that’s become a British catering institution – Meals on Wheels.
The Meals on Wheels concept – delivering meals to those unable to prepare their own – evolved over the years as local authorities worked tirelessly alongside thousands of volunteers to build a modern programme of home support.
Although never fully integrated across the UK, at its peak the service delivered 34 million meals to the elderly and infirm.
Over the last decade that’s decreased by a third. The number of volunteers able to help with the cooking and delivery has also fallen. The majority of councils have moved away from freshly cooked meals, to using frozen, pre-cooked, re-heated meals.
There’s now a fight on to save Meals on Wheels’ services around the country. Two people who have taken up the challenge are among television’s most popular culinary champions, The Hairy Bikers, aka Dave Myers and Simon King.
Ian Houldsworth, Sammic UK’s Managing Director has first-hand experience of Meals on Wheels’ services, having been involved in supplying equipment for two big city centre kitchens some years ago. It never occurred to him the service would ever be under threat.
We could all be affected at some time in our lives. The number of people aged 60 and over is expected to rise 50% in the next 25 years.
We’ll all know someone who will need a service like this to help them through each day. It’s not just about the food but about the visit of a friendly face and contact with the outside world.
The Hairy Bikers campaign currently features on BBC 2 on Tuesday evenings. Visit

This week, at the “I Sammic International Meeting” at Sammic´s headquarters in Azkoitia, members of all of Sammic´s subsidiaries will get together to analyze the challenges the company faces in the midterm in the framework of Sammic´s 2011-2013 strategic plan.
A gathering in which, besides discusing future strategy, we will lay the foundations for a closer collaboration between the subsidiaries that form our organization.
We are sure that the sharing of ideas and points of view during this meeting will have a positive repercussion in the satisfaction of our distributors and users.

To close the event, the winners of the I Sammic Scholarship Tracy Chang and Athena Thickstun will surprise us with their Culinary creations with a menu created under great Chef Martín Berasategui’s supervision, in whose restaurant they have been working for the past 6 months thanks to the scholarship granted in Sammic’s BasqueStageproject.

Every now and then it´s good to remind our readers about the things we are doing that they might find interesting.

For example, our youtube channel which, far from being new, we now constantly feed with very interesting content.
Sammic’s youtube channel presently shows Sammic’s corporate video in various languages, and two videos shot at chef Martín Berasategui’s kitchen: one shows the processing of fresh potato as an alternative to frozen product using Sammic equipment; the other presents the vacuum packing machines’ range and features.
In the coming weeks we will publish new videos that we are sure will be very useful both to end users and distributors as an element of demonstration and finally as a selling tool.
Besides the content that Sammic generates, the channel shows links to our favourite videos, which we consider can be interesting for our readers and followers.
And of course, we are open to suggestions to improve our channel to better serve our market. Enjoy!
